Financial Assistance Resources for Home Repairs

This is not a complete list of every resource available in the 11 states BlueHub SUN serves. If you do not see your state or community below, that does not mean assistance is unavailable. Contact your state or local housing agency, municipality or nonprofit housing organization to ask about other home repair programs in your area.

Program availability, eligibility requirements and funding may change. Contact each organization directly for current information.

Habitat for Humanity Repair Corps Program

The Repair Corps Program supports critical home repairs for qualified military veterans. Repairs may address health and safety concerns, accessibility, plumbing, electrical systems and other critical needs.

The program is available only through select participating Habitat for Humanity affiliates and may not be offered in every state or community. Homeowners can contact their local Habitat affiliate to learn whether the program is available in their area and whether funding is currently available.

Applicants must generally meet the following criteria:

  • The home must be owned, not rented.
  • A qualified military veteran must live in the home.
  • The home must be the veteran’s primary residence.
  • The veteran does not necessarily have to be the legal owner.
  • Applicants must meet the local affiliate’s requirements.
  • The local affiliate must participate in the Repair Corps Program and have funding available.

Rebuilding Together: Building a Healthy Neighborhood

Building a Healthy Neighborhood is a partnership between Rebuilding Together, volunteers, neighbors, community leaders and local organizations to revitalize neighborhoods with safe, affordable, accessible homes and thriving community spaces.

The program may support home health and safety repairs, accessibility improvements and neighborhood revitalization projects.

Eligibility requirements are established by the local affiliate. Applicants may need to meet the following criteria:

  • The home must be located within the participating affiliate’s service area.
  • The household may need to meet local income requirements.
  • Applicants must meet any additional requirements established by the local affiliate.
  • Priority may be given to veterans, older adults, people with disabilities and families with children.

Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development

The Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development offers several programs designed to help eligible Maryland homeowners make repairs that improve comfort, livability and accessibility.

Depending on the program, assistance may include grants or financing for the rehabilitation, renovation or reconstruction of single-family homes. Repairs may address health and safety concerns, accessibility, heating and cooling systems, plumbing, lead hazards, structural issues and building-code violations.

Eligibility requirements, costs and repayment terms vary by program. Homeowners should review each option carefully and contact the department to determine which programs may be appropriate.

Healthy Homes Production Grant

The Healthy Homes Production Grant provides comprehensive assessments and remediation of identified health and safety hazards in residential properties.

Applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Household income must be at or below 80% of the Area Median Income.
  • The property must be an owner-occupied single-family residence.
  • The property must be located in Allegany, Calvert, Charles, Garrett, Montgomery, Prince George’s, Saint Mary’s or Washington County.
  • Priority is given to households with children under six years old.

Eligible repairs may address mold, gas leaks, roof and gutter problems, plumbing, electrical or structural hazards, accessibility, ventilation, pests and other health or safety concerns.

Massachusetts Home Repair Assistance

Some Massachusetts towns offer financial assistance for repairs and alterations that help homes remain safe and healthy.

Programs may be available in Acton, Bedford, Concord, Lincoln, Sudbury, Wayland and Weston. Some are limited to deed-restricted properties or residents of specific developments.

Applicants may need to meet the following criteria:

  • The property must be located in a participating town or program service area.
  • The applicant must own the home.
  • Some programs are limited to income-qualified households.
  • Some programs are available only for deed-restricted homes or specific housing developments.
  • Repairs generally must address health, safety, accessibility or property-preservation needs.
